Nightfall in New England: Newburyport and Portsmouth [Part 4]

After a whole day of road tripping it was time to bring the second day in New England to an end. We had lunch in Newburyport and then we headed out to Portsmouth where we spent the night. Parts 2, 3 and 4 of this travel series cover our second day in New England. The charming towns we saw so far were once again present at the end of the day, and I think it shows in the images. I can imagine spending so much more time here. But we had more to see so we had to make sure that everything was covered. I hope you'll enjoy these images and on the third day we visited Portland as well as the Portland Head Lighthouse, another highlight of our trip.

Autumn Colors in Newburyport

Once we found a parking spot (Tip: around the church you can find two hour free parking on the side of the road), we began searching for our restaurant where we would have lunch. It was called Angie's Food, and it's an ok place. I had a Ruben sandwich the other various appetizers and burgers. The walk through the city was very enjoyable since the sun was just starting to set which gave even richer colors to the surroundings.

The walking lanes were covered in fallen leaves, as people were headed home from work. We didn't do much in Newburyport, but we walked around for maybe half an hour until heading out to Portsmouth. After a day filled with walking around and exploring, though very enjoyable, we were looking forward to our hotel room.

A Night in Portsmouth

We stayed a little bit outside of Portsmouth but headed into town for a night out. We found this lovely pub called "British Beer Company" (it's a local chain in Massachusetts and New Hampshire). Food and beer were delicious there. There were lots of people inside which made the stay even more enjoyable. Portsmouth isn't as small as the other towns we visited on this first day. It has a prominent harbor and maritime life.

We had this amazing Spinach and Mushroom Pizza, with mozzarella cheese and topped with balsamic vinegar.

After our dinner we walked around Portsmouth. The city was quiet and not too many people could be found on the streets which made taking night shots very easy.

The main sight of the town is the North Church, a steeple visible from most parts of Portsmouth. As you can see Portsmouth at night is a special sight. Even though there weren't many people on the streets you could gaze at the street lights, lovely shopping windows, decorated trees and small town charm.

The image above really captures Portsmouth in one move. The colors of fall mixed with the light of the buildings. It's quite the sight at night, and totally different then during the day.

We eventually headed back to our hotel to get a good nights rest. The next day was upon us and a big drive along the coast awaited us. We were headed for Portland and then inland through the White Mountain National Forest. Both yielded amazing sights. But more on that in part 5.
